Jeanne Mackin Signing The Beautiful American

Jeanne Mackin wil sign The Beautiful American.

From Paris in the 1920s to London after the Blitz, two women find that a secret from their past reverberates through years of joy and sorrow ....

As recovery from World War II begins, expat American Nora Tours travels from her home in southern France to London in search of her missing sixteen-year-old daughter. There, she unexpectedly meets up with an old acquaintance, famous model-turned-photographer Lee Miller. Neither has emerged from the war unscathed. Nora is racked with the fear that her efforts to survive under the Vichy regime may have cost her daughter’s life. Lee suffers from what she witnessed as a war correspondent photographing the liberation of the Nazi concentration camps.

Nora and Lee knew each other in the heady days of late 1920s Paris, when Nora was giddy with love for her childhood sweetheart, Lee became the celebrated mistress of the artist Man Ray, and Lee’s magnetic beauty drew them all into the glamorous lives of famous artists and their wealthy patrons. But Lee fails to realize that her friendship with Nora is even older, that it goes back to their days as children in Poughkeepsie, New York, when a devastating trauma marked Lee forever. Will Nora’s reunion with Lee give them a chance to forgive past betrayals … and break years of silence to forge a meaningful connection as women who have shared the best and the worst that life can offer?

A novel of freedom and frailty, desire and daring, The Beautiful American portrays the extraordinary relationship between two passionate, unconventional women.

Mark Supley Signing Capital Region Motorcycling

Mark Supley will sign Capital Region Motorcycling.

“I hope this book will inform the reader of many motorcycle activities that were held in the past and introduce them to the many colorful personalities who participated in the events,” Mark Supley states.

This book boasts more than 200 vintage images and chronicles motorcycling history in this area. In the early 20th century, with the local economy experiencing unprecedented growth, people had enough savings to be used for leisure activities, such as enjoying the sport of motorcycling. Among other topics, Capital Region Motorcycling looks at the evolution of the Electric City Riders Motorcycle Club and its early members.

Mark Supley has lived in the Capital District area all his life. His lifelong passion for motorcycles began as a child when he started to hang out at the three motorcycle shops located within two miles of his home in Ballston Lake, New York. His twelve-year racing career included sidecar motorcycle racing on ice. Skilled at restoration, Mark won the Antique Motorcycle Club of America national award for his 1926 Harley Davidson. Mark and his wife, Paula, can be found riding his 1976 Honda 550 around his summer place near Hampton Beach, N. H.

Nancy Castaldo Signing Sniffer Dogs (And Their Noses) Save The World

Nancy Castaldo will be signing her book Sniffer Dogs (And Their Noses) Save The World.

In Sniffer Dogs you will meet many dogs and their handlers and learn all about their jobs. Some of these dogs are raised from birth to detect blood sugar levels in their owners. Others are rescued from animal shelters and their boisterous personalities help make them excellent sniffer dogs. Featuring a balance between science and social science, Sniffer Dogs will appeal to dog lovers and science lovers alike.
Anyone who has ever spent time with a dog knows that dogs love sniffing! They sniff out hidden food, dirty socks, and the visitor who comes to the door. But some dogs work with police officers, soldiers, and even scientists, to put their "sniffers" to work. Sniffer dogs make use of the amazing biology behind their noses to protect people from bombs, catch criminals smuggling drugs, or help researchers locate a hard to find snail in a forest.!

A dog's nose is so sensitive that if a human could see as well as a dog could smell, we would be able to see four miles away. Is it any wonder then that dogs can be trained to find missing people in piles of rubble or a certain flower blooming amongst hundreds or thousands of other smells? The Wall Street Journal writes” This fascinating account will leave young readers feeling wonder and gratitude for the gifts of the canine set.”

Nancy F. Castaldo is a former environmental educator and author of many notable nature books for children, including Deserts, Oceans, Rainforests, Rainy Day Play, River Wild, and Sunny Days and Starry Nights. “Research and writing,” says Castaldo, “go hand-in-hand! I love writing books for children that get them thinking about the world around them.”
